New categories added
I’ve added new categories and tags and gone back and added them to older posts. Hopefully it will make the site easier to search!
Trying something new
anyone have any comments on what this page looks like?
I’m thinking about adding phots where I have them to the top og individual pages and a link to a PDF pedigree chart.
The first one I did is here http://akansasfamily.com/wordpress/?page_id=140
Let me know if you have any thoughts on how it looks
Design Issues
I’m not liking how the Families page is looking. The arrows won’t line up correctly and it looks cluttered and confusing. The idea was to have things look like this:
person
parent 1
grandparent1a
Greatgrandparent1a1
Greatgrandparent1a2
grandparent1b
Greatgrandparent1b1
Greatgrandparent1b2
Parent 2
Grandparent2a
Greatgrandparent2a1
Greatgrandparent2a2
Grandparent2b
Greatgrandparent2b1
Greatgrandparent2b2
etc….
But it just doesn’t look right…anyone got design ideas?
Adding more individuals to the family page
I’ve added pages for more individuals on the family page. I’m not thrilled with the layout of the arrows, but fixing that may be awhile. I’ve included brief excerpts on each person with children and families. I’ll add more when I can.
Index of all names finished
I finally finished the index listing of all names (as of December 2008) without crashing the site. I’ll add later names as I can. The format lists the person’s name, birth, death, and spouse. Some people get two listings since they have more than one spouse. Also, it’s just alphabetical by last name. So Mary Jones might be listed after Larry Jones. Oh the idiosyncries of report formats.
Surnames
Here’s a list of SURNAMES in my database right now. Following each name is the number of people with that surname.
Once I get it figured out, I’ll list a report with all names in the database. UPDATE: I’m doing this — slowly– and the names can be viewed at the index tab on the top of the page.
Links fixed — I think!
I think I’ve fixed the links on the Family page so they go to the correct people now. Note to self…NEVER EVER EVER change the person numbers again…lol…
Some new stuff!
Thanks to Karen Blagg, I recently received a disk of old family photos and tidbits for the Blagg/Johnson family. I’ll be incorporating some of them into the database as I get to it. There’s also some interesting family histories that I won’t post because of copyrights, but if you want to know more, let me know. I’ll also try to edit more of the tombstone pics so they have location info on them to help keep them organized. Plus, I should be updating the tags on here so it’s easier to find stuff, but that’s a long term process.

fixing stuff —
I got some of the family page links working again, am adding place coordinates so maps show in the database, trying to fix the media so they are linked to people again, and am working on adding cemetery information. Oh and deleting a bunch of duplictates that I keep creating.
A couple people have asked in e-mails about why I require a password for the database….well…I keep most of my documentation and sources online. Since some of it is the work of other people, I don’t really want it just posted out there where everyone in the world could see it and stick it on one of those pay sites. Any family members can ask for a password and I’ll give ya one. I just figure this way I’m a lot less likely to accidently violate anyone’s copywrite and/or irritate someone because I forgot to give proper credit. I try to provide links to my sources that are online…but we all know links die…so I tend to cut and paste stuff to preserve it since I really don’t print things out and keep paper copies. : )
I’ll be putting up locations and sources on the media images here in the near future. A lot of them are from before I decided to do a website so I didn’t really source them well. : (
ummm…that’s about it….
I accidently killed some links!
I did a major database upgrade for the backend program so links to individuals and families may have been changed and not working right now.
