more speculation on Ruth

ok…here’s some more speculation:

FACT:
Jacob Light Founded New Richmond, OH

Probably bought land in Randolph Twp, Dearborn Co. in 1814

New Richmond is on Robert Beal’s survey of 1000 acres and David Jackson’s survey of 333 acres. 1804 – Jacob Light purchases the Jackson survey and lays out the town of New Richmond on 85 acres. Divided into 219 quarter-acre lots, six 60′streets and one 33′ street. Lots numbered 98 and 99 were reserved for public use. The name was suggested by a nephew of Jacob’s who had lived in Richmond, Va and suggested New Richmond.
The town later added the adjacent town of Susanna, founded by Thomas Ashburn which stood on 875 acres and was laid out in 1816. Thus Jacob Light is given the designation of the Founder of New Richmond, Ohio.

SPeculation:
Ruth is often listed as being from Virginia. Is she connected to the nephem of Jacob? a more distant relationship than maybe I thought but i’m casting the net farther now.

Ruth Light Whitney Golladay’s Migration route

Trying out a little google map showing her path from birth to death. I’m trying to figure out to use the google map for visual aid in showing where people lived. This one still needs a little work.

Opposed to War COles COunty Ill

Opposed to War.

this link is just interesting for the background about Greasy Point Coles County.  That is where Joseph Golliday (oliver Whitney’s stepfather ) once lived with his first wife.  It also features a family where the wife has the name Light and might be a relative of Ruth.  It also confirms movement between Clermont Ohio and Coles Illinois.

Joseph Golliday Will

Well, today I got my packet of info on Joseph Golliday’s will. In the words of the people from the Nebraska State Historical Society ” the quality of the prints is regrettably very poor”. The originals were apparently quite faded when microfilmed and the film itself has not held up well. The actual original may be on file in Phelps County Clerk Office and I may eventually try to get copies from there. Anyway, the good news is there was enough readable to answer a number fo questions and as always create more.

trying out the Press This* feature.

The link above goes to a page on Joseph Golladay’s son George, Ruth’s stepson. It details his Civil War service.
* Press This is a WordPress plugin that lets you just click and creates a basic post with a title and link to the web page you are viewing. It ought to help me basically bookmark pages I find on the internet so others can go see where I’ve been researching. I’m experimenting with it.

A little error out there

Yep, there’s a a few errors out there about our family. Some pretty understandable, some transcription erros and some just bad speculation. I’ll occasionally post a few on here to help me (and maybe you) keep track. Otherwise I find myself going back and cleaning up the same misinformation time after time. And, if anyone finds errors on mine on here….well LET ME KNOW! : )

So, I was looking at the Kansas Pioneers site and saw they have Oliver Perry whitney and Cordelia Moser and Samuel and Rebecca Moser all as pioneers in Burr Oak, Doniphan starting in 1874. Well, that’s probably not right. I know the info makes sense when you look at birth places and years of the childrens births, but my own research would place OP and Cordelia in Smith County, KS in 1875 as the earliest documented place in Kansas. Samuel Moser first shows on a census in Kansas in Burr Oak Doniphan in 1895 and Rebecca nevers appears in Kansas. Sam and Rebecca move to Nebraska from Iowa in 1873 and live there apparently until Rebecca’s death. Most documents I’ve found show OP and Cordelia coming from Iowa directly to Kansas then going to Nebraska around 1880 after Joe Galladay’s death. Anyway, there’s no documents I can find showing any of them in Doniphan COunty in 1874. The link to the Pioneers site is here http://skyways.lib.ks.us/kansas/genweb/pioneers/piolstwz.html

Stumped

Okay, I’m stumped. : (

I’m still fairly sure that Oliver Perry Whitney’s mother Ruth is somehow connected to the Light Family in Clermont Ohio in 1850. But, I can’t prove a link. There’s a Peter and Hepsibeth (Whitney) Light living there. There’s a James and a David Whitney the right ages to be OP’s grandfather and uncle

A Family Feud!!!

Much thanks to Phelps County Phelps Helps newsletters and the book “Happy as a Big Sunflower” about life in early Phelps County. This book has several other brief mentions about our family, like descriptions of Joe Galladay’s speaking style, Josephine Moser Steward’s husband’s card playing, and Jacob and Sam Moser too!!

Several families including the Galladay, Moser, Daggett, Sweezey and Miller’s went to Phelps County. Nebraska in about 1873. Sometime shortly after that, William “Crazy” Miller, who’d been the first sheriff, abducted one of Ruth and Joseph Galladay’s daughters ( possibly Cordelia/Phidelia) when she was 16. He kept her imprisoned for some time and she apparently had 1, perhaps 2, sons. She escaped to the Dale farm and was rescued by Emma Dale and her husband. According to the Phelps Helps Newsletter, she went then by train to rejoin her family who had moved away. In 1877, Miller was shot by a group of men including James Sweezey, Sam and Jacob Moser, John Daggett and Bob and Sam Dale in an incident on his land bordering the Moser farm. Miller was killed by Sweezey (who was sheriff after Miller)and Dale injured.
