WOW!!!!
I found a reference to Sam Moser!!!!!! It says he’s a tailor too!!!!
whitney odds and ends
In 1910 Living with Jacob and Eva Moser
in Rocks Falls are Earl and Ida Fink who are
Mary Pearl Whitney Fink’s children (Oliver and Cordelia’s grandchildren).
Mary died in around 1905. Ida later lives
with Josephine Whitney Callwell another daughter of Oliver and
Cordelia in 1920. I just found it interesting that
these Fink children ended up with
Jacob and Eva. The children were born near St. Joe
and it seemed off these 6 and 8 year olds were
with great uncle and aunt.
Next, Clyde Phillips Nancy Whitney’s son lives with his AUnt Elsie Atkins in 1920 in Miami County KS. On the same page is Wendell Surface, grandson of Michael Surface , Rachael WHitney’s second husband. Recall that I think Rachael is Oliver P. Whitney’s aunt. Currently following this a bit to see if it leads anywhere. Other coincidences, Wendell has a daughter Elsie, Joseph Galladay’s first wife was an Atkins. Probably won’t go anywhere, but who knows.

A little error out there
Yep, there’s a a few errors out there about our family. Some pretty understandable, some transcription erros and some just bad speculation. I’ll occasionally post a few on here to help me (and maybe you) keep track. Otherwise I find myself going back and cleaning up the same misinformation time after time. And, if anyone finds errors on mine on here….well LET ME KNOW! : )
So, I was looking at the Kansas Pioneers site and saw they have Oliver Perry whitney and Cordelia Moser and Samuel and Rebecca Moser all as pioneers in Burr Oak, Doniphan starting in 1874. Well, that’s probably not right. I know the info makes sense when you look at birth places and years of the childrens births, but my own research would place OP and Cordelia in Smith County, KS in 1875 as the earliest documented place in Kansas. Samuel Moser first shows on a census in Kansas in Burr Oak Doniphan in 1895 and Rebecca nevers appears in Kansas. Sam and Rebecca move to Nebraska from Iowa in 1873 and live there apparently until Rebecca’s death. Most documents I’ve found show OP and Cordelia coming from Iowa directly to Kansas then going to Nebraska around 1880 after Joe Galladay’s death. Anyway, there’s no documents I can find showing any of them in Doniphan COunty in 1874. The link to the Pioneers site is here http://skyways.lib.ks.us/kansas/genweb/pioneers/piolstwz.html
The Moser Migration
Here’s a little google map showing the Moser’s traveling thru the country! It needs some work. You have to click on the blue labels to get the info to show up, I’d rather it popped up when you hovered over it. Also, maybe different colors, but still it’s helpful in seeing where they were at different times. I think I might make one for each census year to show where each family was at the time.
A Family Feud!!!
Much thanks to Phelps County Phelps Helps newsletters and the book “Happy as a Big Sunflower” about life in early Phelps County. This book has several other brief mentions about our family, like descriptions of Joe Galladay’s speaking style, Josephine Moser Steward’s husband’s card playing, and Jacob and Sam Moser too!!
Several families including the Galladay, Moser, Daggett, Sweezey and Miller’s went to Phelps County. Nebraska in about 1873. Sometime shortly after that, William “Crazy” Miller, who’d been the first sheriff, abducted one of Ruth and Joseph Galladay’s daughters ( possibly Cordelia/Phidelia) when she was 16. He kept her imprisoned for some time and she apparently had 1, perhaps 2, sons. She escaped to the Dale farm and was rescued by Emma Dale and her husband. According to the Phelps Helps Newsletter, she went then by train to rejoin her family who had moved away. In 1877, Miller was shot by a group of men including James Sweezey, Sam and Jacob Moser, John Daggett and Bob and Sam Dale in an incident on his land bordering the Moser farm. Miller was killed by Sweezey (who was sheriff after Miller)and Dale injured.

So what’s been going on here?
I’ve got most of the kinks worked out. Still not happy with the interfacing of the blog and the database software, but there’s not any terrific option to fix the issues now. So, for now, you have to log in to them separately. You can leave comments here without a login, but to view the database you need to sign up and get a login and have me send you a password. Just e-,ail me or leave me a comment and I’ll set you up.
On the research front, there’s not a lot new. Found a spouse for Jacob Moser’s daughter “Feby” who seems to really be named Pheobe. No new info on the Whitney/Moser ancestors tho. I’m thinking about having the Nebraska Historic Society do a search for me to get Joseph Galladay’s will, and some info from the Nebraska 1885 census. But we’ll have to see. Ancestry.com has an index for the census, but the transcription is horrible! Ruth is Ralle, someone is Orlines, I can’t figure out who, and Homer is Heman. All listed as Galady instead of Galladay. But it does indicate they stayed in Rock Falls until at least 1885. Haven’t done much on the other family lines recently and still need to prune out the “legendary” people from dates before say 1600 or so.
